It is one of the most common questions we hear from parents, and the good news is that children can start enjoying soccer earlier than many people think. Here is a simple guide to starting ages and what to expect at each stage.

From around age 3

Children as young as three can begin, though at this age it is all about fun, movement and confidence rather than rules or matches. Sessions use games, songs and simple ball skills to help little ones get comfortable with the ball and being part of a group.

Ages 5 to 8

This is a popular age to start. Children can follow simple instructions, love being active with friends, and pick up the basics of dribbling, passing and shooting quickly. Small sided games keep everyone involved and make sure each child gets plenty of touches on the ball.

Ages 9 and up

Older children are ready for more structured training, including tactics, teamwork and game awareness. Whether your child is brand new or has played before, a good program meets them at their level and helps them keep improving.

It is never too late to start

One of the best things about soccer is that children can join at almost any age and quickly feel part of the team. The right environment, friendly coaches and a focus on fun, matters far more than starting early.
